It’s “Grizzly Season” Pub Day!

Grizzly Season Front CoverI’m thrilled that the second book in the Greg Salem series is available today!

The action in GRIZZLY SEASON picks up right where BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION left off—former punk musician and disgraced police officer Greg Salem is hiding out in the mountains with his sidekick Marco. They’re going for a hike, but stumble on a sophisticated marijuana growing operation run by a sociopathic cult leader who calls himself Magnus Ursus.

From there it’s all GROWL SNORT PUNCH PUNCH KICK POW POW VROOM BOOM!—set to a soundtrack of SoCal punk rock. You get the picture.

Big thanks to Tyson Cornell and the whole crew over at Rare Bird Books. And a special shout out to my editor, Elaine Ash.

I’ll also be taking the show on the road this month. You can find out about GRIZZLY SEASON signings and readings HERE.

In the meantime, here’s what a few people have had to say about GRIZZLY SEASON so far:

“Unflinching, GRIZZLY SEASON is a powder keg, a sustained, dissonant punk rock chord that shakes the reader until its final climactic cadence. Superb.”

—Stephen Jay Schwartz, Los Angeles Times bestselling author of BOULEVARD and BEAT

“Lauden’s new novel is wired with promises and threats that anything just might happen, and then it does—again and again. The furious pace never lets up. By the end you’ll be bruised by the ferocious beauty of Grizzly Season.”

Joseph Di Prisco, author of THE ALZHAMMER and THE POPE OF BROOKLYN

“GRIZZLY SEASON is a pulse-pounding, pulpy slice of LA noir that embroils an ex-cop punk-rock surfer, a lethal ‘Frankenstein’ hybrid strain of weed, and a seedy underbelly of grizzly mountain drug dealers in a break-neck thriller by S. W. Lauden that leaps off the page. A must read that echoes Raymond Chandler mixed with Kem Nunn.”

Lee Matthew Goldberg, author of SLOW DOWN and THE MENTOR

“Whether screaming from beneath the West Coast beach waves or rising above the Pacific Crest mountain heights, the continuing adventures of Punk Rock Cop Greg Salem will indeed rip your head off in the most mellow of ways.”

Delfin Vigil, author of DEATH OF A NEWSPAPERMAN

“Sex, drugs, rock & roll…and bears. Lauden’s latest has everything you want in a great thriller.”

Chantelle Aimée Osman, author, editor, creative consultant

“I finished this book and thought of Travis McGee—that Florida Keys shaggy PI that John McDonald came up with. Or, better, Ian MacKaye as Joaquin Phoenix from Inherent Vice…”

Adam Novak, author of TAKE FOUNTAIN and FREAKS OF THE INDUSTRY

“Hard-edged with a deft eye and ear portraying the stone cold graspers hustling for their illicit piece of the illusory rainbow, S. W. Lauden delivers the delicious jagged goods in Grizzly Season.”

Gary Phillips, author of 3 THE HARD WAY  and PEEPLAND

“The heart of Los Angeles pumps fast and hard in this modern noir mystery packed with immediate action that doesn’t stop for a beat. Lauden laces Grizzly Season with so many twists, readers won’t know what hit them.”

Anne Tibbets, author of CARRIER AND WALLED, plus EXTINCTION BIOME as Addison Gunn

“Grizzly Season” Cover Reveal

Grizzly Season Front CoverThrilled to share the cover of the second Greg Salem novel with you! GRIZZLY SEASON picks up where my debut novel, BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION, left off. Rare Bird Books will release it this October, but I’ll have a handful of copies with me at Bouchercon in New Orleans.

Here’s the synopsis: Former Los Angeles police officer Greg Salem and his sidekick Marco escape to a remote cabin in the backend of the Angeles National Forest, only to have their peaceful retreat upturned after stumbling across the marijuana farm operation called Grizzly Flats. When the drug lord Magnus Ursus’ latest marijuana crop leaves Greg’s hometown and closest friends in disarray—setting off a series of explosive scenes including high-speed motorcycle chases, violent porn shoots, high-altitude gun fights, Mexican drug smuggling and murder—Greg is forced out of retirement to avenge his home and save the lives of those closest him.

Thanks For One Hell Of A Year

rsz_screen_shot_2015-12-31_at_73623_am

As the year comes to an end, I wanted to thank all of you awesome people for supporting my debut mystery novel, BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION. It’s a dream come true to publish a book, but nobody would have heard about it if it wasn’t for the feedback, support and encouragement of the greater crime/mystery universe that I am lucky enough to roam.

And thanks to my partners over at Rare Bird Books, and my editor Elaine Ash. Looking forward to bringing a second Greg Salem novel into the world in 2016 with your help. But not until Down & Out Books publishes my novella, CROSSWISE, in March.

Thanks for one hell of a year! Looking forward to another great one in 2016.

I also published 52 interviews on this blog in 2015. That’s a new Q&A every Monday for an entire year. Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to participate.

I have learned a lot about writing, publishing and marketing by connecting with such talented people. I can’t wait to continue reading your short stories and books, following your blogs and listening to your podcasts in 2016.

Here is a small collection of awesome quotes from those interviews in 2015:

Some Recent BCC Reviews

rsz_screen_shot_2015-10-19_at_32253_pm

BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION is more of a cerebral pleasure than an adrenaline rush or an all-out emotional experience, but it is a sneaky and sophisticated mystery that will please even the most die-hard fans of the genre. Hilary Davidson finally has some competition for best mystery writer in the business!”—Benoit Lelievre for Dead End Follies

“Like the best punk song ever played, Bad Citizen Corporation is raw and unpolished, it rips and roars, screams and pounds.”—Josh Stallings, author of YOUNG AMERICANS

“In the end, I want more Greg Salem. I want to find out about a few of the other mysteries in his life and I definitely want to see his Los Angeles again. I especially want to see him kick ass on stage a few more times. I’m absolutely psyched to see what Lauden has next (we should be seeing more very soon from Down & Out Books, if I remember correctly). He’s a talent out of the west coast to watch for.”—Angel Luis Colon for MyBookishWays

“Tight as a snare drum and as lean and mean as early Pelecanos, Bad Citizen Corporation is the dog’s bollocks.”Paul D. Brazill, author of KILL ME QUICK!

“There is nothing better than finding a debut novel with strong recommendations from authors you dig and having the novel read like it was written by a seasoned pro. In other words, picking up Bad Citizen Corporation by S.W. Lauden is gonna make a lot of readers very happy.”—Derrick Horodyski for Out of the Gutter

Publication Day*

rsz_screen_shot_2015-11-03_at_55934_am

Fire up your time machines, kiddies!

November 3, 2015 is the official publication day for my debut mystery novel, BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION. Kinda funny since the ebook has been available for two weeks already and the print version started shipping last Thursday—but still, PUBLICATION DAY*!

If you’re an early adopter, thank you for taking a chance on my Surf Noir novel about a punk rock cop on the beaches of LA. It took five years and tons of revisions—thanks to generous feedback from trusted beta readers, support from the incredible crime/mystery community, my editor Elaine Ash, and the talented crew at Rare Bird Books—but I’m stoked at how the book turned out.

rsz_screen_shot_2015-11-03_at_61708_amI’ve also been blown away by the positive feedback I’ve gotten so far. Reviews on Amazon and Goodreads are the best way for you to let other readers know about your favorite books, no matter what books or authors you’re reviewing. So, if you have the time, please leave an honest review of BCC. Also totally understand if reviews are not your thing.

Thanks for all the support either way. It feels like two kittens are wrestling inside my chest right now, all because of you. Yes you.

Now, back to writing the sequel…

My First Official Review

rsz_screen_shot_2015-10-23_at_12300_pm

The nice people over at My Bookish Ways have come in with the first official review of BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION. I couldn’t be more thrilled.

“In the end, I want more Greg Salem. I want to find out about a few of the other mysteries in his life and I definitely want to see his Los Angeles again. I especially want to see him kick ass on stage a few more times. “Bad Citizen Corporation” eBook Available Now!

BCC Cover FinalThanks to everybody who pre-ordered the print edition of my debut novel, BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION. That one will be shipping Nov. 3 as promised.

The ebook is now available at Amazon!

Please click the link and check it out. Need a little more coaxing? Here are a few blurbs from some amazing modern crime and mystery writers:

“Carrying on in the tradition of musician turned mystery writers like Jo Nesbo and Bill Moody, S.W. Lauden’s BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION pounds out an impressive rock-and-roll thriller. The story comes on strong and never lags behind its neck-breaking beat. Greg Salem, part-time punk rocker, now disgraced cop, plays like the bastard love child of Poly Styrene and James M. Cain. Add to the mix murder and mayhem—the girl who got away, seedy bars, real estate scams, vengeful heiresses, and an oddball assortment of thugs from the old neighborhood—drop it all under the warm Californian sun, and you’ve got the hit song—and must read—of the season.”

—Joe Clifford, author of JUNKIE LOVE and LAMENTATION

“Beach noir with some serious punk rock bonafides. BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION is a rush of a debut novel that poses timely, thoughtful questions set to a breakneck tempo.”

—Rob Hart, author of NEW YORKED

BCC pumps fresh blood into the corpse of American mystery. Lauden debuts with the storytelling ease of a veteran author. It’s fun, sun-scorched, and salty as the beaches it hails from.”

—Tom Pitts, author of HUSTLE and KNUCKLEBALL

“Like a punk rock Lew Archer novel, BAD CITIZEN CORPORATION challenges you to keep up with the twists and turns. A murder mystery that goes from sun-kissed L.A. beaches to dirty rock clubs in a story filled with damaged souls and the lasting bonds of friendship.”

—Eric Beetner, author of RUMRUNNERS and THE DEVIL DOESN’T WANT ME
